She Cultivates: Young Women in STEM and Agriculture
At the tender age of 16, Xinlan Tanner’s journey is one of determination, passion, and a love for her flock of sheep. Xinlan's story begins in Kenai, Alaska. Mentored by her mother in STEM and Abby Ala in farming, she is committed to learning, and growing and has become a local success story. Her efforts caught the attention of local food advocates and her farm work was highlighted in the documentary, Nourishing the Kenai, shining a spotlight on her story of determination and success.
SHOW NOTES
I'm Xinlan Tanner, farmer, entrepreneur, and student. I am 16 years old, homeschooled, and located in Kenai, Alaska, where I live with my mom and brother. Growing up, moving from place to place, I had always admired those in agriculture and wished I could experience the joys and sorrows of farming. In 2017, this dream was realized when my family moved from Anchorage to Kasilof to start farming. I began my own sheep breeding project the following year, learning, growing and meeting other young farmers through the Kenai Peninsula 4-H program. Despite my parents' separation in 2021, I continue to raise sheep, though from a new location - Kenai. 2024 will be my 7th year as part of the agricultural community of Alaska, and hopefully one of the best yet!
