Estimated Breeding Values with Michelle Canfield
This is part two of our live recorded episodes from the AAAS where examine the impact of emerging technologies on the way we produce food and how we can leverage that technology to build a better and more resilient food system. Michelle Canfield is a farmer and an electrical engineer in the medical device industry by day and in her free time does education and outreach around quantitative genetics for seedstock selection.

SHOW NOTES AND LINKS
Michelle lives in the Pacific Northwest on a 37-acre century-old dairy farm with her husband, raising grass-fed lamb. Her “day job” is as an engineering project manager in the medical device industry; her degree is in Electrical Engineering and she has spent many years writing software. She has two Border Collies (once four), which were the original motivation for the farm. They needed livestock on which to practice their skills, which Michelle occasionally enjoys putting to the ultimate test at local stockdog trials. But now that she has a farm, she finds there is little time to train for trials and travel, so the dogs just do useful work these days! Shee also has two livestock guardian dogs, chickens, and of course, the sheep. Every day is an adventure on a farm!
ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES - NATIONAL SHEEP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
What are Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs)?
Estimated Breeding Values or EBVs are science-based, industry-tested measurements of heritable traits that can be tracked and measured. EBVs are proven to improve on-farm productivity and enhance breeding decisions.
For those familiar with Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) used in cattle, EBVs are very similar. EPDs denote the breeding value of an individual animal’s progeny whereas EBVs denote the value of the individual animal. More simply, EBVs equal EPDs times two.
